Manning was a three-year starter on the baseball team under head coach Bill Gibson. In 1961, Manning led the PSAC in batting average (.441) and stolen bases helping the Mountaineers capture the first-ever PSAC Championship. Mansfield lost just one game during the course of that season. A speedy centerfielder, Manning was a career .404 hitter and held the school record for stolen bases and triples for many years after his graduation.
