One of the top rebounders in Mountaineer basketball history, Turner was a three-year starter who played on three PSAC championship basketball teams. Mansfield went 73-14 and advanved to post-season play all three years "Jungle Jim" started. During the 1959-60 season, the team advanced to the finals of the NAIA District 30 Championship. In 1960-61, the Mounties went 20-1 and again advanced to the District 30 finals.

After returning to school for the 1963-64 season, Turner led the team to a 20-4 record and a trip to the NAIA National Championship where his team won two of three games played. Nicknamed "Jungle Jim" for his physical play underneath, Turner averaged double figures in both points and rebounds for his playing career. He was also a pitcher on the 1960 PSAC Championship baseball team and a field man on the 1964 track & field team.
