Coleman was a two-year starter for the Mountaineer football program under head coach Tom Elsasser. In 1985, Coleman hauled in 12 catches for 308 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He a reeled in a team-best 75-yard reception against Edinboro that season. The following year, Coleman led Mansfield with 41 catches for 644 yards and four touchdowns. Coleman averaged 5.1 receptions a game in 1986. He was named to 2nd Team All-PSAC East honors at wide receiver following the 1986 season.
 
Coleman has worked as a nationally syndicated radio host and commentator on ESPN since 2004 and is currently co-host of the Freddie and Fitz Show. He has made appearances on television shows First Take and AirCheck along with ESPN's NFL Draft coverage. A strong advocate for Mansfield University, Coleman served as the spring 2013 commencement speaker and has returned to speak at the Frank Butsko Breakfast and to communication classes.
