A four-year letterwinner for the wrestling team in the early 70's, Sassani was team captain his junior and senior seasons.

During his senior yearin 1974, Sassani became the first Mountainer wrestler to earn All-American honors at the NCAA Division III National Championships. He was also named MU's Outstanding Senior Male Athlete for 1974.

Despite suffering serious injuries that would limit his time on the mats during his sophomore, junior and senior seasons, Sassani still compiled a 41-20-3 career mark.
