Mansfield Athletics

Phelps was a starter in the backfield of the Mansfield State Normal School football team during the 1898, 1899, 1900 and 1901 seasons. In 1900 he led the Mountaineers to a 7-0 record, still the second most wins in school history. In his 50^th year anniversary history football, Karl Van Norman named Phelps to his first team as one of the best players in school history. Phelps later served as coach of the 1904 team that went 5-0-1 on the season.
