SB: Mountaineers Drop a Pair at Lock Haven

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Anastasia Berardi drove in six runs to ignite the Mansfield University softball team on a late comeback, but Lock Haven University prevailed in the bottom of the sixth to steal a 12-9 victory in game one, before taking the nightcap, 4-0, to earn a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East sweep on Thursday, March 30.

Berardi started her day with a three-run blast in the top of the first inning of game-one, giving the Mounties (9-11, 0-8 PSAC East) an early 3-0 lead with her second homer of the season.

The Bald Eagles (13-11, 3-5 PSAC East) didn't wait long to answer, erupting for six runs during the ensuing frame to take a 6-3 lead.

Trailing 7-3 heading into the fifth inning, the Mounties cut the deficit to two when Berardi drove in her fourth and fifth runs of the day with a double over the center fielder's head.

The Haven erased those two runs in the bottom half to extend their lead to 9-5.

The Mounties put their best inning of the day together in the top of the sixth, scoring four runs on five hits to knot the game at 9-9.

However, the Haven plated three runs in the bottom half, before retiring the Mounties in the seventh to secure the victory.

Berardi finished game one 3-for-6 with a home run, double, and six RBIs. Morgan Berndt continued her hot start to the season, finishing 3-for-3 with an RBI, while Lauren Watson and Fallon Kelley also drove in runs.

For LHU, Keiva Middleton picked up the victory in relief, pitching 1 and 2/3 scoreless innings after entering the game in the sixth inning.

Annabella Putnam (3-5) landed the loss in the circle for MU, battling through six-complete innings, allowing 12 runs (seven earned) and striking out six.

In the nightcap, the Bald Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning and let their pitching do the rest, defeating the Mounties 4-0 to earn the sweep.

Game two starter Gabby Drum landed the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) in one inning of work. Sarah Sherman kept the Mounties hopes alive, limiting LHU to one run in five innings of relief.

The Mountaineers collected four hits, led by Caydence Macik, who finished with two, including a double.

Madison Waltman pitched a complete-game shutout to earn the victory for the Bald Eagles, finishing with seven strikeouts.
