Mounties Outshoot Mercyhurst but Fall in Season OpenerMANSFIELD – Mansfield held a 9-7 shots-on-goal advantage but Mercyhurst found the net twice to pull out a 2-0 PSAC win in the season opener for both teams Thursday afternoon at the Soccer Field.
Mansfield applied pressure early and throughout the game including back-to-back shots on goal by junior
Kelsey Chapman and sophomore
Danielle Lentz in the game's first eight minutes of play.
Mercyhurst got on the board in the 20th minute when Lauren Testa scored off an assist from Linnea Laitnen.
Mansfield came right back with Chapman putting a shot on goal a minute later but was denied by Laker goalie Ellie McDougall. Three minutes later the Mountaineers
Bri Carr's shot on goal resulted in the same outcome.
Kelly Howiszak almost tied the score in the in the 36th minute with a shot that went off the crossbar with Mercyhurst holding on to a 1-0 advantage at halftime.
Mercyhust added to its lead with a goal by Janine Wong on a penalty kick five minutes into the second half.
Mansfield responded aggressively again, taking three shots on kicks by
Karyn Anselmo,
Brielle Filtch and Carr over the next five minutes could couldn't break the ice.
Running out of time, the Mountaineers mounted one last flurry getting off five shots -- two of them from
Sara Weaver -- in the game's final five minutes but to no avail.
Senior
Alana Greenawalt went the distance in goal for Mansfield recording five saves. McDougall stopped nine shots in registering a shutout for Mercyhurst.
Mansfield travels to Gannon on Saturday.
