Mounties Knocking on the Playoff Door after Sweep at Lock HavenÂ
LOCK HAVEN – Seniors
Kate Pratt and
Emily Crandell each threw complete-game gems to lead Mansfield to a must-have sweep over Lock Haven and put the Mountaineers on the doorstep of clinching a PSAC playoff berth.
Mansfield won the opener 3-0 behind Pratt's four-hit shutout and captured the nightcap in 2-1 nail-biting masterpiece by Crandell at Lock Haven's Lawrence Field Friday afternoon.
The sweep, which gives the Mountaineers the tiebreaker against Lock Haven, moves Mansfield to within a win, or a Millersville loss, of clinching the Mountaineers second straight PSAC playoff berth.
Mansfield, which has four regular season games remaining, host Millersville, which has two games left, Saturday afternoon for a Senior Day doubleheader at Helen Lutes Field.
In the opener, Mansfield jumped out early taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Courtney Bauder opened the game by drawing a walk and moved to second on a single by
Stephanie Simmeth. One out later,
Amanda Goodwin doubled to right field to score Bauder with Simmeth scoring the second run of the frame on a sacrifice fly by
Kaitlyn Harris.
Mansfield added a run in the Bauder led off and reached on an error in the third. She moved to second on sacrifice bunt by Harris before taking third on a wild pitch. A single by Goodwin to left scored Bauder with the third run of the game.
Facing one of the biggest games in her stellar career, Pratt was magnificent on the mound in picking up her ninth win of the season. The senior scattered four hits in recording the complete-game shutout, striking out four and walking none while facing just 26 batters. All four hits were singles and Lock Haven didn't have a runner advance beyond second.
Goodwin was clutch going 2-4 from the plate with a double and two RBI.
Rachel Mouillesseaux went the distance and took the loss for Lock Haven.
In the nightcap, Mansfield broke up a scoreless tie with a pair of runs with two outs in the top of the third.
Emily Crandell led off the inning with a double to the gap in left center. She was still on second two outs later when Simmeth drew a walk.
Pratt followed with a single to drive in Crandell with Simmeth, who had moved to third on the play, scored on an error by the catcher.
Lock Haven cut the lead to 2-1 scoring off a wild pitch in the bottom of the third.
The Bald Eagles threatened again in the fourth inning when Erica Pooler led off with a double down the line. Crandell got the next batter to fly out before Paige Stuppy singled to put runners on first and third. Stuppy stole second but Crandell got herself out of the jam with a strikeout and groundout to end the inning.
Lock Haven threatened again in the seventh when Stuppy led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Crandell extinguished the threat getting the next batter to pop up before ending the game by inducing a ground out.
It was a gutty performance by Crandell who threw her sixth complete game of the season while scattering five hits and striking out five.
Pratt drove in the only run of the game for both teams.
Jessie Probst went the distance, throwing a complete-game five hitter, to take the loss.
