Secord and Inman Clutch in Split with Kutztown

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Secord and Inman Lead Mounties to Split with Kutztown – Pratt tosses 1-hitter in 1-0 Loss in the opener – Mounties Win Seasonal Series against Kutztown for First Time in School History

MANSFIELD – Freshman Hannah Secord drove in what proved to be the winning run and Ashley Inman was stellar in relief to lead Mansfield to a 7-5 win over Kutztown in the nightcap of a PSAC East doubleheader Friday afternoon at Lutes Field.

Kate Pratt threw a one-hitter in a 1-0 loss in the opener.

With the split, Mansfield remains in fourth place in the PSAC East with a 9-9 conference record. The Mountaineers, who host third place Bloomsburg in a doubleheader Saturday at Lutes Field, are ahead of Millersville and Lock Haven each with a 10-12 record in the division.

In the nightcap, Mansfield scored its first runs of the day in the second inning after Kutztown had taken a 1-0 lead on a home run by Mary Kociencki.

With one out in the bottom of the inning, Kaitlyn Harris walked and moved to second on a single by Inman. Secord followed with another single to load the bases. Emily Crandell drew a walk to force in a run and Laura Lawson followed with a sacrifice fly to drive in the second run. Courtney Bauder followed with another RBI single before Amanda Goodwin singled in two more runs for a 5-1 lead.

But Kutztown wouldn't go away. The Golden Bears got a run in the third and three runs in the fourth to tie the game at 5-5.

In the bottom of the fifth Mansfield built a run with Megan Miller drawing a one-out walk and advancing to second on a bunt single by Kaitlyn Harris. Inman reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases before Secord singled to left to drive in what proved to be the winning run.

Mansfield got an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double by Pratt.

Inman was clutch in relief of starter Emily Crandell, allowing no runs and just two hits over the final 3.2 innings to pick up her fourth win of the season. Secord went 3-3 from the plate to lead the offense.

Dominique Ficara took the loss in relief.

In the opener, the Mountaineers dropped their second straight one-run heartbreaker in a 1-0 setback.

Pratt threw a one-hitter, with Morgan Booth's one out solo home run in the first, the only hit and run of the game for the Golden Bears. Pratt retired 17 straight batters until Booth reached on an error to lead off the seventh inning.

Pratt led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a triple off the centerfield wall but Mansfield couldn't squeeze across the tying run.

Pratt struck out three and walked one in her complete-game one-hitter to fall to 7-4 on the season.

Ficara went the distance striking out five and walking none while giving up three hits.

With the split, Mansfield wins the four-game series with Kutztown 3-1 marking the first time in school history the Mountaineers have won a seasonal series against the Golden Bears.
