MANSFIELD – Nationally-ranked West Chester used some timely hitting to rally past Mansfield in extra-innings in the opener in a sweep over Mansfield Monday afternoon at Helen Lutes Field.
West Chester won the opener 7-4 in eight innings and captured the nightcap 6-2.

In the opener, West Chester got a run in the top of the first inning on a RBI single Kim Murl and held that lead until the third inning.

Freshman Kayla Allen led off the bottom of the third with a single and moved to second on a single by Courtney Bauder. Amanda Goodwin advanced both runners with a sacrifice before sophomore Ashley Inman delivered a two-out single to right to drive in both runners for a 2-1 lead. Senior Kaitlyn Harris plated the third run of the inning with a single to right.

Mansfield added another run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by Amanda Goodwin to left increasing the Mountaineers advantage to 4-1.

The score held until the top of the sixth inning when West Chester drew lead off walks off starter Kate Pratt. Inman replaced Pratt, who threw 10 innings in a complete game win yesterday, and induced a double-play.
But West Chester got some timely hitting, including a two-run double by Ali Vavala, to score three runs and tie the game at 4-4.

Mansfield had chances to retake the lead in regulation getting runners on second and third with two outs in the sixth when Pratt just missed a two-run home run with a double high off the centerfield fence. The Mountaineers also stranded a runner at second with one out in the seventh.

West Chester, ranked 23rd in NCAA Division II, loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth. After a force play at the plate, the Golden Rams got two runs with Erin Quense singled past a drawn in Mansfield infield so drive in what would prove to be the winning runs.

Mansfield, which had a 12-8 advantage in hits, was led at the plate by Bauder who went 3-5. Inman went 2-4 with two RBI's while Harris was 2-3 with an RBI. Inman took the loss in relief.
Murl started and was credited with the win for West Chester.

In the nightcap, West Chester got a run in the first and added four more in the second before Mansfield got on the board.

The Mountaineers scored a run in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single by Kaitlyn Hewitt and closed the gap to 5-2 when Pratt launched her sixth home run of the season and 38th of her career to lead off the third inning.

But Mansfield could pull no closer in dropping a 6-2 decision.

Emily Crandell started and took the loss for the Mountaineers with Pratt going 3-3 with a double and home run.

Micaela McSpadden started and picked up her 10th win in 11 decision for West Chester.

Mansfield travels to East Stroudsburg on Thursday.
