FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Softball Drops Twinbill at West Chester
WEST CHESTER – After being delayed by more than a week because of inclement weather, the Mansfield University softball team came up on the short end of a PSAC doubleheader at West Chester Monday.
Mansfield fell 3-2 in the opener after West Chester rallied from a 2-0 deficit and dropped a 9-1 decision in the nightcap.
In the opener, Mansfield started the game with a single from
Stephanie Simmeth who later scored on a single to center by
Kate Pratt. Two batters later, Pratt scored on a double by
Amanda Goodwin for a 2-0 lead.
West Chester tied the score in the bottom of the second, picking up two runs on a two-out double by Kim Begley.
One inning later, Jessica Norris led off with a home run to give West Chester a 3-2 lead.
Mansfield had a chance to tie the score in the fifth when freshman leadoff with a single and stole second but the Golden Rams starter Kim Murl managed to retire the heart of the Mountaineer lineup with giving up a run.
Mansfield threatened again in the top of the seventh when Allen singled with two outs and moved to second on a single by Simmeth. West Chester replaced starter Murl with Katie Erb who got
Courtney Bauder to line out to second to end the game and earn a save.
Mansfield outhit West Chester 7-6 in the game with starter
Kate Pratt allowing just six hits over six innings while striking out seven and walking two.
Simmeth went 3-4 to lead the offense with Allen going 2-3.
Murl picked up the win with Erb earning her third save of the season.
In the nightcap, Mansfield took an early 1-0 with a run on an RBI double by Goodwin in the top of the first. West Chester countered with a one in the bottom of the inning on a single by Murl.
West Chester scored three runs more runs on two hits in the bottom of the fourth to put the game out of reach.
The Golden Rams outhit the Mountaineers 8-5 and also go help from three Mansfield errors.
Goodwin went 2-3 with a double and RBI to pace the offense with
Courtney Bauder collecting two hits.
Emily Crandell started and took the loss for Mansfield with
Ashley Inman pitching three innings of relief.
Erb picked up the win for West Chester with no Golden Ram having more than one hit.
Mansfield schedule doubleheader at Bloomsburg for Tuesday has been postponed. The Mountaineers are scheduled to play Kutztown on Wednesday.
