FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mounties Battle to Victory Against St. Augustine's
WINSTON-SALEM, NC – In their last game of the Winston-Salem Tournament, Mansfield beat St. Augustine's University by a score of 4-1.
The first five innings were scoreless for both teams. Although Mansfield was able to garner five hits by
Stephanie Simmeth,
Courtney Bauder,
Kaitlyn Harris, and
Megan Miller, the Mounties were unable to drive any runs home until the top of the sixth inning. Although Simmeth attempted to steal home in the top of the first inning, she was caught stealing, and catcher Jolanda White tagged the senior at the plate.
Emily Crandell started on the mound for Mansfield for the fourth time this season. The senior only gave up one hit through the first five innings to right fielder Jennifer Plair.
Leading off the top of the sixth, Bauder hit a double to left field. The junior was hit home on a RBI double down the left field line by
Kate Pratt to put Mansfield up 1-0. With no one out and Pratt on second, St. Augustine pitcher Hannah Stutts was relieved by Korey Hill. Stutts left the game with two strikeouts. With runners on the corners and no outs, Harris hit an RBI single to right field to bring Pratt home. With bases loaded and two outs on the board, Miller drew a walk. Harris was able to score to make the score 3-0 Mansfield. Following Miller's walk,
Alanna Jenkins crossed home plate on a fielder's choice to make the score 4-0. Simmeth was credited with the RBI.
In the bottom of the seventh, Hill started the inning off with a single to left field. The pitcher was brought home on a RBI double to right center by White to make the score 4-1. After facing 22 batters, Crandell was relieved by
Ashley Inman. With one out and a runner on second, Harris made the defensive play of the game for Mansfield with a diving line drive catch to put Mansfield within one out of victory. Inman ended the game by striking out first baseman Michelle Shackleford.
Mansfield's victory puts them at 8-2 on the season. St. Augustine's falls to 6-13.
Stutts was credited with the loss to put her record at 0-3 on the season. Crandell (2-2) won her second game of the season while Inman garnered her second save.
Mansfield was led at the plate by Harris (2-4, one RBI, one run), Pratt (2-4, one RBI, one run), Simmeth (2-4, one RBI), and Bauder (2-4, one run).
Mansfield travels to Shippensburg Mar. 22 to being their PSAC schedule. The double header is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
