Â
WINSTON-SALEM, NC –
Kate Pratt led Mansfield past Shaw University on the mound and at the plate in a 19-2 win in their first of two games in North Carolina.
Â
Mansfield, the visiting team, put up four runs in the first inning against the Lady Bears.
Stephanie Simmeth scored the first run of the game off of a
Courtney Bauder RBI double to left center. Bauder went on to score on a passed ball to put the Mounties up 2-0. With bases loaded,
Megan Miller hit a two RBI single to left field. Both Pratt and
Kayla Hahn scored on the play to make the score 4-0.
Â
With Mansfield starting at the top of their lineup in the second inning, the rally continued for the Mountaineers. Bauder hit in Simmeth on an RBI double down the left field line to make the score 5-0. The doubles kept coming as Pratt followed up Bauder with an RBI double to third base. With one out and runners on second and third,
Kaitlyn Harris hit an RBI single up the middle. Pratt was able to score from third. However,
Ashley Inman was thrown out at the plate by a long throw from centerfielder Bri Bease to catcher Shanice Anderson to keep the score 7-0 Mansfield.
Â
Pratt, in her sixth start of the season, came into the contest 2-0 on the mound. She was perfect the first two innings and was backed up by a flawless defense, including a difficult line drive to Bauder to end the second inning.
Â
The Mounties came into the third inning hungry for more.
Kaitlyn Hewitt recorded her first RBI on the season on a two out RBI single up the middle. Freshman
Kayla Allen would score to put Mansfield up 8-0. Hewitt would go on to score off a
Hannah Secord RBI single to left field. With runners on first and second and two outs, Hahn was able to reach first off of a fielding error while Pratt reached home to put Mansfield up 10-0.
Â
Leading off the fourth inning,
Amanda Goodwin reached first by running out the throw from third to first. Goodwin was then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Allen. With one out and bases loaded, Pratt hit a two RBI single to left field to bring in Goodwin and Simmeth. After loading the bases a second time in one inning, Hahn hit a two RBI single to right field. Bauder, Pratt, and Inman would all score on the play to put Mansfield up 15-0.
Â
After three hitless innings, Kamesha Brathwaite recorded the first hit for Shaw with a single up the middle. Brathwaite would put the Lady Bears on the board for the first time all game off of a RBI double down the left field line by Jolene Arroyo. Following Arroyo's double, Pratt calmed down on the mound to strikeout two of the next three batters. The inning ended with a score of 15-1 Mansfield.
Â
With 13 hits already on the board, the Mounties kept the streak going well into the fifth inning. Goodwin led off for Mansfield with a bunt to get on first. The junior was then moved to second on a single down the left field line by pinch hitter
Alanna Jenkins. Simmeth would come to the plate and bring in Goodwin on an RBI single to right field for Mansfield's 16
th run of the game. With one out and two runners on base, Pratt hit a bomb over the left field fence for a three run homer to put Mansfield up 19-1.
Â
After pitching four complete innings, Pratt was relieved by
Laura Knight. With one out, Shaw's Bease was able to work a 3-1 count on Knight to draw only the second walk of the game for the Lady Bears. The centerfielder showed off her speed by stealing two bases during Chelsea Holliday's second at bat. Bease was able to reach home on a throwing error and make the score 15-2. However, that would prove to be the last run of the game as Shaw fell 19-2 after observing the mercy rule.
Â
Pratt (3-0) was credited with the win to remain undefeated. The senior gave up a mere two hits while striking out four.
Â
The Mountie were led at the plate by Pratt (3-4, six RBI's, five runs), Bauder (2-2, two RBI's, three runs), and Simmeth (2-3, one RBI, four runs).
The win puts Mansfield at 7-2 while Shaw drops to 0-12 on the season.
