MANSFIELD – Freshman
Courtney Bauder went six-for-six from the plate as the Mansfield University softball team swept PSAC Central division rival Clarion University with a 12-4 result in the opener and a 9-5 decision in the finale Tuesday afternoon at Helen Lutes Field.
In the opener, Mansfield pounded out 14-hits marking the 11
th time in 22 games this season the Mountaineers have had 10 or more hits in a game. Six of those hits came in the first inning as Mansfield scored seven runs in the frame, more than they would need to win the game.
After
Stephanie Simmeth walked to open the game and
Kaitlin Kramer reached on an error,
Kate Pratt blasted her seventh home run of the season, and fifth in the last seven games, over the center field fence scoring three runs.
Chara Dixon then doubled and scored on a RBI single by
Courtney Bauder with
Allie Earle doubling in run and later scoring on a single by Simmeth who batted twice in the inning.
Clarion cut the lead to 7-1 with a run in the second and closed the gap to 7-4 with three runs off home runs by Taylor Sherry and Rebecca Lynch in the fifth.
Mansfield starter
Caitlin Klobosits was relieved by
Emily Crandell after Lynch's home run and Crandell retired the next two batters to end the threat by Clarion.
In the bottom half of the fifth, Bauder led off with a single and moved to third on a single by
Kaitlyn Harris. Bauder scored on a wild pitch before
Jordan Rishel plated another run with a sacrifice fly. Pratt later singled in another run before
Chara Dixon end the game on the 8-run rule with another RBI single.
Klobosits scattered five hits and strike out three in 4.1 innings to earn her fourth win in seven decisions on the year. Crandell retired both batters she faced.
Bauder went 3-3 while Dixon was 3-4 with a double and an RBI. Harris went 2-3 from the plate while
Kate Pratt was 2-4 with a home run and four RBI.
Julie Sokol went the distance on the mound for Clarion to fall to 2-5 on the season. Powell led the offense going 2-2.
The nightcap was an old fashion pitcher's duel as Clarion's Megan Daley allowed just two hits through four innings and Mansfield's
Liz Pieniazek allowed just one hit through five innings in the circle.
The Mountaineers broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth when junior
Caitlin Klobosits scored on a fielding error after pinch running for senior
Erin Carroll who led off with a double to center. Junior
Kaitlin Kramer brought home Kelly Pfleegor, who reached on the fielding error, via an RBI triple before scoring on a
Kate Pratt RBI ground out to second.
In the top of the sixth, Clarion put together a five-run inning that was capped by an Amanda Gough home run to lead 5-3 over the Mounties.
In the bottom of the inning,
Courtney Bauder led off with a double to left field before reaching home on a Kaitlin Harris fielder's choice. Two batters later with bases loaded, sophomore
Stephanie Simmeth roped a bases-clearing double to right-center field to put Mansfield on top 7-5.
The Mountaineers added two more insurance runs after Pratt hit a deep sacrifice fly to right field scoring both Simmeth and Kaitin Kramer.
Mansfield blanked the Golden Eagles in the top of the seventh as Pratt came into close out the contest.
Sophomore
Emily Crandell picked up the win in relief, giving up one earned run and striking out two in 0.2 innings. Pieniazek earned a no decision, giving up four earned while striking out five batters in 5.2 innings of work.
Daley pitched a complete game effort for the Golden Eagles giving up seven earned runs on seven hits in the loss.
Bauder went three-for-three with a run in the finale to complete a perfect six-for-six day at the plate.
Kramer was two-of-four on the day with two runs, and RBI and a stolen base. With her stolen bag, Kramer sits at sixth for most stolen bases in a season and needs just three more to move into fifth.
The Mounties are back in action on Saturday, April 7 when they host Lock Haven University for senior day at Lutes Field.
