Army Too Much for Mansfield in 56-7 CSFL Win

WEST POINT, NY – Army quarterback Javier Sustiaita threw for five touchdowns to lead Army to a 56-7 win over Mansfield in a CSFL game Friday night at Shea Stadium.

Mansfield played a spirited first quarter but couldn't contain Army's potent offense and trailed 28-7 at halftime.

Neither team could mount a scoring attack early in the game until Army capped a seven-play, 70-yard drive with a 14-yard touchdown pass from Javier Sustiaita to Cody Nyp with 1:48 remaining in the first quarter.

Thomas Jeffers caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Sustiaita four minutes later to give the Cadets a 14-0 lead, but Mansfield came right back with Chao Porch returning the ensuing kickoff for 66-yards to the Army 15-yard line.

Three plays later freshman quarterback Mike Maniscalco bullied in from two yards out to cut the lead to 14-7 with just over 12 minutes to play in the first half.

But Army answered with a 8-paly 65-yard drive, topped off by an eight yard pass from Sustaita to Cody NYP and the Cadets stopped an ensuring Mansfield drive on their 22-yard line on an interception and drove down the field to take the 28-7 halftime lead.

Army put the game away by scoring on each of its first four drives in the second half.

Mansfield posted 186 yards in total offense on 70-plays but couldn't match Army's 604-yard output.

Mansfield freshman quarterback Mike Maniscalco completed 12-of-22 passes for 116 yards and was intercepted once. He also had 33-yards rushing.

Pat Mackewicz caught five passes for 57 yards and Porch racked up 152-yards on five kickoff returns. Cody Croasdale recorded a game-high 12 tackles and Paul Houseknecht had nine stops for Mansfield.

Army improves to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the CSFL while Mansfield falls to 1-2 overall and in conference play.

Mansfield hosts Navy for Homecoming Saturday, Oct. 8.
