Klobosits Fires Three-Hit Shutout as Softball Splits at Clarion

Caitlin Klobosits threw a three-hit shutout and struck out seven at Clarion to improve to 1-1 on the season.

CLARION – Caitlin Klobosits threw a three-hit shutout to lead Mansfield to a 3-0 win at Clarion in a PSAC Central doubleheader Sunday afternoon.

Clarion won the opener 4-2.

In the nightcap, Mansfield scored the only runs it would need with two runs in the top of the first when Stephanie Simmoneth led off with a singled and scored on a fielder's choice from Nicole Yost.

The Mountaineers scored their second run of the inning on a double-steal with Janelle Antes stealing home.

Mansfield added another run in the fifth on an RBI single by Kate Pratt.

Klobosits, a sophomore lefty, baffled Clarion batters all afternoon scattering three this and striking out seven while issuing just one walk to post her first shutout of the season and second in her career in improving to 1-1 on the season.

In the opener, Clarion scored two runs off Mansfield starter Melissa Baer in the second inning on a two-run double from Nicole Lindner.

Clarion got two unearned runs in the third off a single by Katie Baun and double by Nicole Lollo.

Mansfield got on the board in the fifth when Jamie Castellano led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kelley Pfleegor. Castellano later scored on a single from Janelle Antes.

In the sixth, Mansfield got three straight singles from Nicole Yost, Erin Carroll and Danielle Long to load the bases with one out before Jordan Rishel singled in a run but Clarion starter Megan Daley managed to strike out the next batter before getting a ground out to end the threat.

Senior Melissa Baer went the distance in taking the loss scattering seven hits and striking out four while allowing two earned runs. Erin Carroll led the offense going 2-3 with a double.

Mansfield goes to 9-14 overall and 2-8 in the PSAC Central while Clarion is 6-12 and 1-7 in PSAC Central play.

Mansfield host Lock Haven on Wednesday in a PSAC Central doubleheader starting at 2:30 p.m.
