MANSFIELD - The Mansfield University men's basketball team is set to host PSAC East foe Bloomsburg University at Decker Gymnasium on Friday, Jan. 3 at 7:30 p.m.
The Mounties (3-7, 2-3 PSAC) we look to kick off the New Year the same way they ended the previous with a conference victory.
Senior
Trevor English is leading the PSAC in rebounding with an average of 11 per game. The senior center is fourth in the conference in field goal percentage, knocking down 59 percent of his shots from the floor.
After starting the first six games of the season, junior
Christian Simmons made the unselfish move to the bench and is averaging 18.0 points and 6.9 rebounds per game with the second unit. Simmons also joins English in the conference's field goal percentage top-ten (.505).
LAST TIME OUT
- The Mounties earned their second conference victory of the young season when they took down Clarion University, 79-73 in their last outing on Saturday, Dec. 21.
- The trio of Jahmir Green, Eli Alvin and Jaz Farrell shot 15-of-23 from the floor and combined for 10 assists and 16 rebounds. Farrell knocked down 4-of-5 shots from 3-point land, dished out three assists and pulled in three rebounds. Alvin was a spark plug off the bench for the second straight game, connecting on 6-of-8 shots from the floor while finishing with a plus/minus of 13. Green finished with a 10-point, 11-rebound double-double and dished out a game-high seven assists. Junior Garrett Cook was 4-of-7 from three on his way to 12 points and English contributed 10 points and six rebounds.
- The Mountaineers also 16 Clarion turnovers while only committing eight and outscored the Golden Eagles, 21-16 in bench points.
- Trailing 39-38 heading out of the half, the Mounties allowed the first triple of the period before responding with a three from Cook and five straight points from Alvin to knot the game at 44 with 17:21 to go. Clarion took the lead on the ensuing possession, but a transition layup from Farrell and a trifecta from Cook gave the Mounties their first lead since midway through the first half, 49-46 with 15:27 left.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
- The Huskies were winners of four straight before dropping their previous three with their last defeat coming at the hands of Gannon, 89-84 on Saturday, Dec. 21.
- Sam Saxton led all scorers and four Huskies in double figures with 23 points, while going 8-of-9 at the charity stripe.
- Justin Anderson is hitting his shots at a 51 percent clip and is leading the team in scoring with an average of 17.6 points per game.
- Max Wagner is averaging 16 points per game to go along with a team-leading 7.9 rebounds.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Mounties hit the road on Monday, Jan. 3 at 7:30 p.m. when they travel to Shippensburg University for a PSAC East game.
The Mounties remain on the road when they travel to Lock Haven University on Wednesday, Jan. 8 at 7:30 p.m. for another PSAC East game.
