Mansfield to Host LUMA 2019 Saturday on 127th Anniversary of World’s First Night Football Game

MANSFIELD – Mansfield University will take part in the annual Light Up Mansfield Again (LUMA) event on Saturday, Sept. 28, 127 years to the day that the world's first night football game was played in Mansfield.
 
The highlight of the weekend is Mountaineer football's CSFL North contest against visiting Saint Thomas Aquinas on Saturday. Pregame includes a performance by the Mansfield University Marching Band, a lighting ceremony, and an 1890's football reenactment before kick-off at 7:15 p.m.
 
Mansfield played in the world's first night football game against Wyoming Seminary at Smythe Park in downtown Mansfield on Sept. 28, 1892 under newly invented electric light provide by the company that would become General Electric. Mansfield is recognized by the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame as the Birthplace of Night Football.
 
Mountaineer softball opens the day's events with its annual Throwback Game at Helen Lutes Field at 10 a.m. The game features the Mansfield softball team wearing throwback uniforms reminiscent of the ones worn in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) in the 1940's and 50's. Two former AAGPBL players will be in attendance to sign autographs in Sarah "Salty" Sands of the Rockford Peaches and JoAnne McComb of the Springfield Sallies.
 
The LUMA Street Fair begins at 3 p.m. at College Ave. in downtown Mansfield and features a variety of vendors including beer and cider tasting.
