MANSFIELD, Pa. - The Steve Zegalia Memorial Scholarship has been established through the Mansfield University Mountaineer Foundation to support Mansfield student-athletes.
The scholarship was created by Rocco Zegalia, son of Steve Zegalia, along with the Zegalia Memorial Golf Outing committee.
"It is a true honor to have a scholarship named after my father as it will allow his legacy to continue within the Mansfield football community," said Rocco. "He was a man of few words but deeply respected by the players he led, and I know he would be pleased that this scholarship is supporting the academic pursuits of future Mountaineer student-athletes."
Coach "Z" was a significant figure in the Mansfield football program for more than a generation, taking over the offensive line coaching responsibilities in 1986. His intense loyalty, dedication, and commitment also became the hallmark of every player he coached. Zegalia passed away unexpectedly in 2003.
Following his passing, Mansfield's annual football golf outing was renamed the Steve Zegalia Memorial Golf Outing. Held each July, the event brings together Mountaineer football alumni and friends to support the program.
A portion of the fundraising efforts during the annual Zegalia Golf Outing will support the scholarship and the $25,000 endowment goal. Funds from the golf outing also directly support the football program.
Once endowed, the scholarship will support Mansfield student-athletes from Pennsylvania who maintain a 3.0 or higher GPA.
