Baseball’s Playoff Hopes Dashed in Pair of Loses to #21 Millersville

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Baseball's Playoff Hopes Dashed in Pair of Loses to #21 Millersville

MILLERSVILLE – Westyn Baylor extended his hit streak to 13 games in the opener, but Mansfield fell to No. 21 Millersville 15-4 Friday afternoon in a home contest played on the road at Cooper Park.

The Mounties fell 9-1 in the nightcap to dash their hopes of a PSAC playoff berth.

Millersville opened game one with two runs on two hits and an error in the top of the first inning, but the Mountaineers answered right back in the bottom of the frame. Taylor Hillson led-off with a single and Eric Schanzenbacher was hit by a pitch before Baylor drove in a run with an RBI single through the left side. Zephan Kash drew a two-out walk to load the bases before Jacob Molison tied the game with a single through the right side.

The Marauders broke the game open in the third by plating five runs on five hits and two errors.

Kash and Scott Rockwell drove in runs in the fifth and sixth innings, but Millersville's offense continued to roll, scoring four runs in each the sixth and seventh innings.

Chris Murphy improved to a perfect 10-0 on the mound, pitching 6.0 innings with 10 hits allowed and four earned runs. Tommy Alexander took the loss after 5.0 innings of work with eight earned runs allowed.

Baylor, Kash and Rockwell each recorded two hits in the game for the Mounties.

In game two, Millersville again put up a pair of runs in the first inning to take an early lead.

In the bottom of the first, Schanzenbacher hit a one-out double and later scored on an error to cut the deficit to one run.

Millersville plated a pair of runs in the third before hanging five insurance runs in the seventh to sweep the doubleheader.

Brandon Miller improved to 10-1, pitching 6.0 innings with three hits and six strikeouts. Zach Sacoman took the loss.

Mansfield, which needed to win at least five of its final six games to have a chance, was eliminated from PSAC playoff contention.

The Mountaineers will play their regularly scheduled away doubleheader with Millersville tomorrow before hosting West Chester in the season finale on Sunday.
