Road Woes Continue to Plague Mounties in Upset Loss at Cheyney

Box Score FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Road woes continue to plague Mounties in tough loss at Cheyney

8436CHEYNEY – Mansfield's season-long curse road curse continued Saturday afternoon when the Mountaineers suffered an 86-77 setback at Cheyney in a PSAC East contest.

Joe Bell, the Mountaineers newly crowned scoring leader, scored a season and game-high 34 points but Mansfield couldn't stop Cheyney's red-hit outside shooting in dropping their fourth-straight game.

Mansfield led early, scoring the first five points of the game, and held a 35-34 advantage with a little more than three minutes remaining in the first half on a part of Bell free throw before Cheyney closed out the half on a 6-0 run to take a 40-45 lead into the locker room.

Cheyney continued it hot outside shooting, extended its lead to 68-54 with just under nine minutes to play before the Mountaineer countered with one of numerous rally attempts.  A 3-pointer by freshman Eric Lewis ignited an 11-0 run that cut the deficit to three points at 68-65 on a pair of free throws by Da`Quan Jones with five minutes remaining in the game.

But as they had done on numerous occasions earlier in the game, Cheyney answered with a 3-pointer – this one from Kevin Larkin – to key a 8-0 run giving the Wolves what would prove to be an unsurmountable 76-65 advantage with ninety seconds remaining.

Bell continued his outstanding offensive play of late, recording his fifth straight game of scoring 21 or more points and becoming the first player in school history to break the 1,800 career point milestone with 1,833 points. The senior connected on 11-of-17 from the floor including a career-best 6-of-9 three-point attempts and pulled down five rebounds.

Thomas Moore added 18 points while Charles Pemberton pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds while scoring seven points.

Kevin Larkin led four Cheyney players in double-figures with 23 points. Jarrod Johnson added 20 points.

The loss dropped Mansfield to one game behind Lock Haven for the sixth and final PSAC East playoff berth with six games remaining the in the regular season.

Mansfield which is 7-4 at Decker Gymnasium, remains winless on the road in nine games this season.

The Mountaineers return home this Wednesday to host Millersville in a key PSAC East battle.
