Pratt's Walk-Off Single Give Mounties Sweep over ESUÂ
MANSFIELD –
Kate Pratt picked up a complete-game win in the opener and drilled a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh in the nightcap to lead Mansfield to a sweep over East Stroudsburg in a critical PSAC East doubleheader Wednesday afternoon on a brisk and windy Helen Lutes Field.
The Mountaineers won the opener 19-7 and rallied for a 5-4 win in the nightcap.
The sweep moves Mansfield back into fourth place and the final playoff spot in the PSAC East with six games remaining in the regular season.
Both teams entered the day with tied for fifth-place in the PSAC East with identical 9-11 division records and both were looking for a sweep to solidify their playoff hopes. The sweep moves Mansfield past Lock Haven (11-13) into fourth place in the division and sets up a showdown between the two teams at Lock Haven this Friday.
In the opener, the Mountaineers 19 runs were the most against a conference foe in school history.
Mansfield capitalized on two hits and three ESU errors in the first inning to score three runs before exploding for 11 runs on 10 hits in the second.
The Mountaineers sent 14 batters to the plate in the inning that was highlighted by
Stephanie Simmeth's two hits, including an RBI double, and Pratt's two-run home run – her seventh of the season extending her school career-record to 39 round trippers.
Pratt held East Stroudsburg hitless over the first three innings facing just nine batters over that span.
East Stroudsburg scored four unearned runs with two outs in the top of the fourth to break up the shutout but the Mountaineers responded with five runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame to take a 19-4 lead.
Pratt and
Amanda Goodwin each had three hits and drove in three runs while
Courtney Bauder went 2-2 with a double and three RBI's. Simmeth, returning back to the lineup after missing the last two weeks, went 2-2 with a double and scored four times while driving in two runs.
Kaitlyn Harris and
Megan Miller each went 2-4 with two RBI's while
Kayla Allen was 2-3 with an RBI.
Pratt picked up her eighth win of the season allowing two earned runs and striking out one.
Laura Suits started and took the loss for East Stroudsburg with Cara McNeil and Amanda McKay each driving in a pair of runs.
In the nightcap, East Stroudsburg scored a run in the first inning and added another in the second on a solo home run by Rae Holden for a 2-0 lead.
The Warriors increased their advantage to 4-0 on a two-run home run by Kasey Meckes in the fourth.
Mansfield rallied in the bottom half of the inning scoring two runs on double down the leftfield line by
Megan Miller and adding two more runs later in the inning to tie the game at 4-4.
Sophomore
Ashley Inman, who relieved starter
Emily Crandell in the fourth, was magnificent in the circle holding East Stroudsburg scoreless and limiting the Warriors to just a pair of hits over the last four innings of the game.
Bauder doubled to lead off the bottom of the seventh on moved to third on a single by Simmeth. Pratt then drilled a 2-1 pitch into left field to score the winning run.
Bauder went 2-4 with a double while Inman picked up her fifth win in seven decisions on the season striking out two and walking one.
Mansfield travels to Lock Haven on Friday before hosting Millersville for Senior Day on Saturday at Lutes Field.
