Mounties Drop Heartbreaker in Nightcap at MillersvilleÂ
had his strongest out of the season allowing just two hits over seven innings but Mansfield dropped a PSAC East doubleheader Friday afternoon at Millersville.
Mansfield lost the opener 6-1 before suffering a heartbreaking 2-1 setback in extra-innings.
In the nightcap, Mansfield took a 1-0 lead when
Brandon Miller delivered a two-out double to drive in
Taylor Hillson in the top of the third.
The Mountaineers got an outstanding performance from Garrett. After giving up a first inning single to Zach Stone, the freshman held Millersville hitless until C. McCormick singled up the middle to lead off the sixth inning.
Millersville tied the game at 1-1 with an unearned later that inning when McCormick, who advanced to third on an error, scored on a wild pitch.
Garrett had retired 12 of 13 batters during that hitless span from the first to sixth inning. The freshman, who allowed just two hits and struck out six over seven innings, was relieved by
Jeremy Mapstone in the eighth.
Mansfield threatened in the top of the eighth inning loading the bases on a one out single by
Westyn Baylor and walks to
Anthony Renz and
Wes Custer but couldn't push across the go ahead run.
Kurt Seiders led off the bottom of the inning with a single for Millersville and stole second. Seiders scored the winning run when Dan Stolzfus singled through the right side on a 1-2 count.
Mapstone took the loss in relief with Jim McDade scattered five hits over nine innings to earn a complete-game win.
In the opener, Millersville scored three runs in the bottom of the first and Mansfield was never able to recover. The Mountaineers did get a run in the second on an RBI by
Stanton Tentnowski.
Anthony Renz had two of Mansfield's five hits in the game.
Zach Stone led Millersville with a 3-3 performance at the plate. Tad Barton went the distance to put up the win with
Quin Taylor taking the loss to fall to 4-4.
Mansfield will host Millersville on Monday afternoon at Shaute Field.
