LeClair Drills 4 Homers Including a Grand Slam to Lead Mansfield to Sweep over Penn College in Home Season Opener
MANSFIELD –
Johnny LeClair hit four home runs including a grand slam and had 11 RBI's on the afternoon to lead Mansfield to a non-conference sweep over Penn College in the Mountaineers home season opener Tuesday afternoon at Shaute Field.
Mansfield (12-5) won the first game 7-3 behind LeClair's 3-run home run and LeClair hit three more home runs, including a grand slam, in a 19-5 win the nightcap.
The Mountaineer pounded out 25 hits in the twinbill and had hit six home runs. The 19 runs scored in the second game were the most runs for a Mountaineer team since scoring 21 runs in a win over Lake Erie in 2010.
In the opener, Penn College (6-4) scored a run in the top of the first inning on a double by Zachary Weil before Mansfield answered with two runs with two outs in the bottom of the inning on a run scoring double by
Westyn Baylor and RBI single by LeClair.
Penn College tied the game at 2-2 with a run in the top of the third on an RBI single by Cody Buterbaugh with Mansfield answering in the bottom half of the inning with a solo home run by
Seth Tressler.
Mansfield added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth when
Anthony Renz led off with a double and scored on a double by
Brandon Miller.
Wes Custer then singled in Miller for a 5-2 Mansfield lead.
Penn College cut the lead to 5-3 with a run in the top of the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Cody Buterbaugh but the Mountaineers put the game away with two runs in the bottom of the inning on LeClair's first home run of the day.
Mitch Iseneker picked up the win, striking out six in four innings before giving way to
Louis Sick who picked up the save by allowing just one hit over the final three innings while striking out three.
Tyler Cooklin (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season on the mound for Penn College striking out four.
LeClair was the only player with more than one hit in the game going 2-3 with a home run and three RBI.
In the nightcap, Mansfield got three runs in the bottom of the first when LeClair hit a 3-run home run off the scoreboard in left center field.
Penn College answered back and took the lead scoring five run in the top of the third inning on a two run single by Cody Buterbaugh and three run home run by Cole Wechock.
Mansfield retook the lead in the bottom half of the inning scoring four runs on a two-run home run by Eric Schhanzenbacher followed by a two-run shot by LeClair.
The Mountaineers put the game away with 12 more runs over the next three innings with LeClair blasting a two-out grand slam in the fifth. LeClair went 3-5 with three home runs and eight RBI in the game. His six home runs on the season are the most by a Mountaineer since John Taddeo hit six during the entire 2010 season.

Brandon Miller each had two hits in the nightcap.
Chas Parsons started on the mound for Mansfield and improved to 2-0 by striking out three over the first four innings.
Zach Sacoman gave up one hit in two innings of relief while
Jeremy Mapstone closed out the final inning.
Joshua Longsderff took the loss for Penn College.
Mansfield is scheduled to travel to Lincoln University tomorrow before heading to Shippensburg for a makeup doubleheader on Thursday.
