FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mansfield Splits With #16 Shippensburg in PSAC East Opener
SHIPPENSBURG –
Amanda Goodwin drilled her first collegiate home run while
Emily Crandell and
Ashley Inman combined for a shutout to lead Mansfield to a 5-0 win over No. 16 ranked Shippensburg in the nightcap of a PSAC East doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Robb Field in Shippensburg.
In Game 1,
Kate Pratt was in a pitching duel with Shippensburg's Emily Estep. Shippensburg's Taylor Weisman was the first person on either team to get on base with a single to right field in the bottom of the second. However, Pratt made the defensive play of the game on a diving line drive catch to get Maddie Justice out. The senior then turned two to get Weisman out on first.
In the top of the third inning,
Amanda Goodwin broke Mansfield's hitless streak with a double to shallow right field. However, the junior was left on base to leave the score 0-0.
To start off the bottom of the third inning, Pratt struck out Estep on a 2-2 for the first out. After working a 3-0 count, Tyler Thompson drew a walk for her first at bat. Thompson was then advanced to third on a stolen base to second followed by a wild pitch. The centerfielder would go on to score the first run of the game off of a throwing error to put Shippensburg up 1-0.
Leading off the bottom of the fourth, Shippensburg's Weisman started the Lady Raiders off with a double to centerfield. The shortstop was advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Justice. With one out and a runner on third, Taylor Pattillo hit a sacrifice fly in foul territory to put Shippensburg up 2-0.
Mansfield came knocking in the top of the sixth inning. Goodwin led off the inning with a double to right field. The shortstop was advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Kayla Allen. With two outs and a runner at third,
Courtney Bauder hit Goodwin home on an RBI single to centerfield to bring Mansfield within one run of Shippensburg.
With the score 2-1 going into the top of the seventh, Mansfield was ready to rally at the plate. With two outs and no one on base,
Kaitlyn Harris kept the Mounties alive with a double to right center field.
Kate Savage came in to pinch run for Harris in hopes of getting the tying run home. Savage advanced to third on a single to the pitcher by
Laura Lawson. Unfortunately, Mansfield's rally came too late in the inning, and the game was ended on Estep's ninth strikeout of the game.
Pratt (3-1) was handed her first loss of the season. The senior finished with four strikeouts and only four hits after six innings. Shippensburg's Estep garnered her seventh win of the season to remain undefeated on the season.
Goodwin (2-3) led Mansfield at the plate with two doubles and one run.
In Game 2,
Emily Crandell started her fifth game of the season on the mound against Shippensburg's Makenzie Lynn.
The Mounties got their bat going early in the top of the second inning. With one out, Harris hit a single to left field. The senior was advanced to second as
Megan Miller drew a walk off of Lynn. Following Miller's walk, Goodwin loaded the bases for Mansfield on a single to left field. However, the Lady Raiders were able to get out of the jam. The Mounties were left with three runners left on base as the score remained 0-0.
Leading off the top of the third inning,
Stephanie Simmeth hit her first home run of the season over the centerfield fence to put Mansfield up 1-0. With one out, Pratt hit a single to left field. The senior was advanced to second on a walk drawn by Harris. Pratt was able to reach home on a fielding error to put Mansfield up 2-0. With two outs and Harris and Miller on the corners, Goodwin hit her first career homerun over the left field fence to put the Mounties up 5-0.
After five innings of play, Crandell gave just one hit. In the bottom of the sixth, Hilary Lyons ended a four inning hitting drought for Shippensburg with a single to right field. Lyons moved to second on her 14
th stolen base of the season. Jessie Trammell followed up Lyons with a walk to put runners on first and second withone out on the board. With Shippensburg's Weisman at the plate, Crandell was relieved by
Ashley Inman. Weisman was able to draw a walk off of Inman to load the bases with one out. However, Inman stayed strong on the mound by striking out Justice and grounding out Casey Thompson to the shortstop.
In the bottom of the seventh, Shippensburg tried to post a comeback. With Tyler Thompson on second with two outs on the board, Inman struck out Bri Giovenco to end the game.
Shippensburg's Lynn (5-3) was credited with the loss. Crandell (3-2) garnered the win. The senior finished with one strikeout while only giving up two hits. Inman's ERA remains untouched as the sophomore remains at 0.00, the best in the PSAC.
The Mounties were led offensively by Goodwin (3-4, three-run homer) and Simmeth (2-4, homerun).
Mansfield (9-3, 1-1 PSAC East) and Shippensburg (15-3, 1-1 PSAC East) are tied for second with West Chester (12-9, 1-1 PSAC East) and Lock Haven (6-11, 1-1 PSAC East). After the first day of PSAC competition, Bloomsburg (9-4, 2-0 PSAC East) is in sole possession of first place.
The Mounties take to the field again on Tues. Mar. 25 against East Stroudsburg on the road. The double header is set to begin at 2:30 p.m.
