FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mounties Power Past Farmingdale State 11-5 for Eighth Straight Win
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. –
Brandon Garrett pitched a gem on the mound and
Westyn Baylor and
Johnny LeClair each hit home runs as Mansfield earned its eighth straight victory with an 11-5 win over Farmingdale State (N.Y.) Sunday afternoon.
Garrett earned his first win of the season, pitching 5.1 innings with just four hits and one earned run. The freshman struck out nine batters.
Baylor and LeClair both went 2-for-4 at the plate with four RBIs and two runs. The duo had a home run and a double apiece in the game. Baylor's three home runs on the season is tied for second most in the PSAC.
After a scoreless first, Farmingdale opened the scoring with three runs on three hits and an error.
The Mountaineers answered right back with four runs in the top of the third inning to take a 4-3 lead.
Brandon Miller plated
Seth Tressler from second with an RBI single before Baylor tied the game with a two-run round tripper over the left field fence. LeClair scored the final run of the inning after a fielding error at second base.
In the top of the fourth, Leclair brought home Miller and
Eric Schanzenbacher with a double down the left field line to put the Mounties up 6-3.
Mansfield jumped out to an 11-3 lead in the fifth inning, scoring five runs on four hits.
Taylor Hillson scored the first run on a Tressler RBI single to left field before Schanzenbacher and Tressler scored on a Baylor double. LeClair brought in two more runs with his first home run of the season.
Farmingdale scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth, but the Mountaineers' lead was too much to overcome.
Daniel Tierney took the loss for the Rams, pitching 2.1 innings with four hits and three earned runs.
Tressler and Schanzenbacher each stole a pair of bases on the day.
Mansfield improves to 9-2 on the season and has five straight games of 10 or more runs.
The Mountaineers play PSAC West opponent Slippery Rock in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. on Monday.
