FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mounties Take Two From St. Augustine's
RALEIGH, N.C. –
Johnathan Earnest pitched a six-inning shutout with seven strikeouts in game one and
Eric Schanzenbacher totaled five hits in the doubleheader as Mansfield swept St. Augustine's Saturday afternoon in Raleigh, N.C.. The Mountaineers took game one 8-0 before posting a 5-4 win in game two.
In the opener, Mansfield put the first run on the board in the second inning when
Brandon Miller laced an RBI single to bring in
Owen Lukens.
In the fifth inning,
Johnny LeClair brought home
Westyn Baylor before
Dave Glueck's bases-clearing double scored Lukens and LeClair.
Schanzenbacher scored on a sacrifice fly then Baylor scored on LeClair's single to make it 6-0 Mansfield after six innings. In the top of the seventh, Glueck reached home on a wild pitch before
Stanton Tentnowski was brought in on
Seth Tressler's RBI single to give the Mounties a season-high eight runs in the game.
Earnest tossed 6.0 innings of shutout baseball, allowing just five hits and striking out seven batters. The senior earned his first victory of the season and lowered his ERA to 0.87.
Zach Sacoman preserved the shutout, pitching the seventh inning.
Sterling James led the Falcons offensively with two hits.
In game two, the Mountaineers again opened the scoring in the second inning, this time recording a pair of runs.
Zephan Kash scored the first run on an error by the St. Augustine's second baseman before LeClair stole home to score the second.
Mansfield hung another run in the top of the sixth inning when
Mitchell Iseneker was brought in on a sacrifice fly.
St. Augustine's answered in the bottom half with a pair of runs to close within a run at 3-2.
In the seventh inning, the Mountaineers scored two runs after Schanzenbacher scored on a wild pitch and Baylor was brought in on an Iseneker RBI double.
The Falcons rallied for two runs in the bottom of the inning, but came up just short.
Quin Taylor earned his first win of the season, allowing just one earned run while striking out four in 5.2 innings.
Jeremy Mapstone struck out two batters in 1.1 innings of relief work to earn his third save of the season.
Mansfield plays St. Augustine's in a nine inning game on Sunday to complete the weekend trip.
