Baseball Opens Season with Win over Saint Rose; Falls to No. 17 Wilmington in Nightcap

SUTHERLAND, Va. – The Mountaineer baseball team opened up the season with a 6-3 win over Saint Rose (N.Y.) before falling 11-5 to No. 17 Wilmington (Del.) in the nightcap on Saturday at the Dinwiddie County Sports Complex in Sutherland, Va.

Mansfield (1-1) opened the scoring against Saint Rose in the second inning when Brandon Miller cleared the bases with a two-run double to take a 2-0 lead. Stanton Tentnowski and Seth Tressler were brought in after reaching base on walks.

The Mountaineers tacked on another run in the fifth inning on a Westyn Baylor RBI single to right field to bring in Eric Schanzenbacher.

The Golden Knights scored in the bottom of the inning to cut their deficit to 3-1.

In the top of the seventh inning, Baylor drove a three-run home run over the high wall in right field to put Mansfield up 5-1. Baylor brought in Miller and Schanzenbacker who reached on a walk and hit by pitch.

Saint Rose scored runs in the eighth and ninth innings, including a solo shot to right field by Scott Hladik, but the Mountaineer lead was too much.

Baylor went 3-for-4 from the plate with four RBIs and a run in the game. Miller was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and a run.

Zach Sacoman earned a win in relief after throwing 4.1 innings. Jeremy Mapstone picked up a save, striking out the final batter. Johnathan Earnest struck out three batters in 4.1 innings of work.

Bryan Carr took the loss for Saint Rose pitching 5.0 innings with five hits and five strikeouts.

In the nightcap, Mansfield hung three runs on the board in the bottom of the first against No. 17 Wilmington. Baylor started the scoring with an RBI double down the left field line to bring home Miller. Anthony Renz put Mansfield up 3-0 with a two-run home run to left.

Wilmington went on to score in each of the next five innings to lead 9-3.

The Mountaineers scored another run in the sixth inning when Schanzenbacher scored on a Renz sacrific fly. Miller scored another run in the eighth on a Johnny LeClair single through the left side to cut the Mansfield deficit to 9-5.

Wilmington added a pair of runs in the top of the ninth inning.

Starting pitching Jamie Treml earned the win for the Wildcats tossing 5.0 innings with 10 strikeouts.

Quin Taylor took the loss for Mansfield in a solid outing against a nationally ranked opponent. Taylor struck out five and allowed three earned runs in 4.0 innings of work. Louis Sick settled in for a quality 4.0 innings of relief on the mound.

Mansfield returns to action tomorrow to take on Mercyhurst and Post.
