FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mansfield Holds Off Post to Earn Split on the Day
SUTHERLAND, Va. –
Marshal Kiessling roped a bases-loaded triple and Mitch Iseneker earned a win in relief to lead Mansfield past Post 6-5 in game two after falling to Mercyhurst 8-2 in the opener on Sunday afternoon at the Dinwiddie County Sports Complex.
Post scored in the top of the first, but Mansfield answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame to take the early lead.
Seth Tressler scored the first run from third on a throwing error caused by
Eric Schanzenbacher stealing second base.
Anthony Renz drove in the second run of the inning on a sacrifice fly to score Schanzenbacher.
After a pair of scoreless innings, Post added another run in the sixth, but the Mountaineers answered again when
Stanton Tentnowski scored
Max Miller on a double to right field to make it 3-2 in Mansfield's favor.
The Eagles added their third run of the game in the sixth inning, but Mansfield scored three runs in the bottom half to jump out to a 6-3 lead. Kiessling drove in all three runs with a bases-clearing triple down the right field line scoring Miller,
Westyn Baylor and Schanzenbacher.
Post rallied for two runs in the ninth, but all hopes of a come-from-behind victory were dashed when closer
Jeremy Mapstone struck out the final batter to give Mansfield the win. Mapstone sat down four batters in 2.0 innings of work to earn his second save of the weekend.
Iseneker pitched 3.2 innings of relief to earn his first win of the season. The senior allowed just two hits and one earned run while striking out five batters.
Laurence Marsach took the loss for Post.
The Eagles had seven hits in the game, but also recorded three errors.
The win gave the Mountaineers a split on the day and improved their record to 2-2.
In the opener, Mercyhurst scored three runs in the first inning and added another in the third to hold a 4-0 lead early. The Mountaineers hung two runs on the board in the top of the sixth, but the Lakers answered back with a pair of their own to make it 6-2. Mercyhurst scored two insurance runs in the eighth inning.
Tressler was pushed home after a bases-loaded walk to score Mansfield's first run before
Brandon Miller was brought in on a Renz groundout to short.
Giancarlo Saia had a two-run homer in the eighth and recorded three runs and three RBIs on the day to lead the Lakers offensively.
Starting Pitcher Jon Corbi earned the win, pitching 5.0 innings with two strikeouts and one earned run.
Baylor took the loss for the Mounties.
Matt Engler struck out three batters in 3.2 innings of relief work.
Mansfield travels to St. Augustine's in Raleigh, N.C. for three games next weekend.
