FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mounties Fade in Second Half in Loss to No. 6 ESU
MANSFIELD –
Charles Pemberton recorded a double-double and Mansfield led for almost all of the first 25 minutes of the game before East Stroudsburg used a 25-3 run to ignite a 75 point second half in recording a 112-79 win over the Mountaineers Wednesday evening on First Citizen Community Bank Court at Decker Gymnasium.
Mansfield played some of its best basketball of the season in the first half jumping out to a 18-7 lead on a
Onyema Utti layup six minutes into the game.
East Stroudsburg --the undefeated No. 6 ranked team in the country -- rallied, cutting Mansfield's advantage to 33-32 with just over three minutes before intermission. A pair of free throws by Utti and a
Joe Bell 3-pointer a minute later upped the Mountaineer lead to 38-32 before taking a 40-37 advantage into halftime.
The first five minutes of the second half featured 10 ties or lead changes before a layup by ESU's Will Brown started a 17-0 run from which the Mountaineers never recovered.
Joe Bell was almost unstoppable in the first half, scoring 15 of his team-high 17 points over the first 20 minutes. Utti scored 15 points off the bench in just 17 minutes of play and Pemberton recorded his sixth double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
Ryan Krawczeniuk added 10 points.
East Stroudsburg (19-0, 9-0 PSAC East) had six players score in double-figures led by Suyltan Aminu with 18 points off the bench.
