Lock Haven Uses Free Throws to Pull Away from Mansfield

Charles Becoats and
Joe Bell each scored 21 points but Lock Haven connected on 28 free throws to Mansfield's six as the Bald Eagles held on for a 85-78 win over the Mountaineers in a PSAC East matchup at Thomas Fieldhouse.
The loss snapped a six-game win streak for the Mountaineers over Lock Haven which won its first meeting between the two schools since the 2006-07 season.
Lock Haven jumped out to a 14-4 lead after the first four minutes of the game and held a 16-10 advantage when Mansfield went on a 16-4 run to take a 26-20 advantage on a layup by Bell twelve minutes into the game.
The Bald Eagles countered, using a 26-10 run to retake the lead at 46-36 at halftime.
Lock Haven held a double-digit advantage for the first nine minutes of the second half before the Mountaineers used a 9-0 run to pull to 58-55 when
Kevonte McClain scored on a layup with just over eight minutes to play.
Mansfield trailed 68-64 with just over three minutes remaining before Lock Haven got a pair of free throws from Wali Hepburn and a key 3-pointer from Al Blount to extend its lead to 73-64 with just under two minutes remaining.
But the Mountaineers didn't quit, closing the gap to 74-70 when freshman
Ryan Krawczeniuk nailed a 3-pointer with 56 seconds left.
Lock Haven dashed the rally by hitting four straight free throws and 8-of-10 from the charity stripe over the final 50 seconds to preserve the win.
The Bald Eagles connected on 28-of-35 attempts from the free throw line while Mansfield managed to hit just 6-of-14. The Mountaineers had four players foul out and were outrebounded 40-35.
Becoats, who scored in double-figures for the fifth straight game, was 8-15 from the floor including 3-6 on 3-pointers before fouling out of the game. Bell recorded his ninth 20-plus point game of the season and pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. Brandy Burke came off the bench to score 10 points, all of them in the first half.
Wali Hepburn topped four Bald Eagles in double-figures with 25 points. Bootsie Walker and Kasheef Festus both recorded double-doubles.
Mansfield returns home to host Shippensburg on Saturday.
