MANSFIELD – Mansfield University field hockey opened the new turf at Karl Van Norman Field by setting an NCAA regular season attendance record with 2,011 fans in attendance, but No. 2 Shippensburg came away with the 5-1 victory Saturday afternoon.

The attendance set an NCAA Division II all-time record and was the third most watched NCAA game in history throughout all divisions. It marked the first home game on the new AstroTurf surface for the Mountaineers who played the last 98 years of the program's existence on grass.

Tori Ricker led Shippensburg with a pair of goals while Bre White put the pressure on the MU defense with a goal and eight shots on goal.

Senior Brianna Velepec scored Mansfield's only goal of the contest on a Taryn Schawillie assist. The goal was Velepec's first of the season.

The Raiders scored the first three goals of the game to take a 3-0 advantage into halftime. Taylor Bender notched the first via a Katie Shoop pass from the top of the circle in the 14th minute. Ricker scored back-to-back goals in the 21st and 32nd minutes, the second assisted by White, to jump out to an early lead.

White scored her fifth of the season in the 40th minute to give Shippensburg a 4-0 lead, before Velepec put Mansfield on the board in the 55th minute.

Kendall Beck scored the final goal of the game in the 62nd minute as Shippensburg came away with the non-conference win.

The Raiders held a commanding 46-10 shot advantage in the game and led penalty corners 18-8.

Mansfield keeper Kristie Rollman recorded a career-high 22 saves in a full 70 minutes in goal. Rollman currently leads the PSAC in totals saves with 60 this season.

Mansfield's Sarah Zwick was credited with two defensive saves in the contest.

The Mountaineers are back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 18 when they travel to IUP.
