FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Slippery Rock Offense Powers Past Mounties
SLIPPERY ROCK – The Rock's Lindsay Brown and Megan McKay both scored a pair of goals as Slippery Rock powered past Mansfield 5-1 Wednesday afternoon in PSAC play that did not count for the conference standings.
Mansfield's lone goal came on a fast break in the 38
th minute when senior
Taryn Schawillie blasted the ball into goal for her seventh score of the season. Schawillie, who leads the conference in goals scored, has scored in each of the Mountaineers first three games.
Schawillie was also credited with two defensive saves while junior
Jessi Swingle (Hunlock Creek/Lake-Lehman) recorded another. It was Swingle's fourth defensive save of the season.
The Rock dominated offensively totaling 35 total shots with 30 going on goal and took 12 penalty corners in the game. Mansfield was limited to just four shots and two corners.
Freshman keeper
Laura Lawson was stellar in her collegiate debut, coming off the bench to record 12 saves with just one goal allowed in 42 minutes of play. Mountaineer goalies combined to record 25 total saves.
Kelsey Gustafson opened the game with a Rock goal in the ninth minutes followed by McKay scores in the 14
th and 17
th minutes. Brown scored her first of the game in the 27
th minute to make it 4-0 before Mansfield got on the board. Brown notched her second goal in the 48
th minute.
The Mountaineers are back in action on Saturday, Sept. 14 for the inaugural game at the Karl Van Norman Field AstroTurf. The Mountaineers will attempt to break and NCAA attendance record on Saturday when they host No. 2 Shippensburg at 2 p.m.
