FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Klobosits strikes out 14 in shutout as Mounties split with Goldey-Beacom

WILMINGTON, DE – Senior Caitlin Klobosits struck-out 14 batters and threw a three-hit shutout in a 2-0 win in the opener but three Mansfield errors led to four unearned runs and a 5-2 setback in the nightcap as the Mountaineers  split a doubleheader at Goldey-Beacom Saturday afternoon.

In the opener, Klobosits was masterful allowing just a double in the second inning, leadoff single in the sixth and double in the seventh in improving to 3-0 on the season. The lefty struck out at least one batter in every inning except the seventh and struck out the side in the sixth.

Klobosits used pin-point control all afternoon and did not allow a walk though all eight innings.

While Klobosits was dominating on the mound, the Mansfield hitters struggled to get the offense untracked forcing the game into extra-innings where the international tie-breaker was used.

In the top of the eighth, freshman Megan Miller was placed on second and moved to third on a bunt single by Chara Dixon. Amanda Goodwin ran for Dixon and stole second giving Mansfield runners at second and third with no outs. Stephanie Simmeth then lifted a fly to center to score Miller on a sacrifice fly. Courtney Bauder followed with a double moving Goodwin to third where she scored on passed ball.

Klobosits didn't allow the runner to advance beyond second in the bottom of the inning to preserve the win. She now has 38 strikeouts in 22 innings worked on the season. The 14 stikeouts ties her career-best set last season against West Liberty. Bauder went 2-4 with a double and Kate Pratt tripled.

Golden-Beacom's Courtney scattered six hits over eight innings to take the loss.

In the nightcap, the Lighting got some help from Mansfield errors in picking up their first win in six decisions this season.

Mansfield took a 2-0 in the top of the third when Bauder reached second on a lead-off error and Kate Pratt walked. Freshman Ashley Inman then singled to score Bauder and Miller drove in Pratt with a sacrifice fly to right.

Goldey-Beacom would strike back in the bottom of the inning scoring three unearned runs off two Mansfield errors.

Emily Crandell relieved Pratt in the bottom of the fourth. In the fifth, Goldey-Beacom scored another unearned run to take a 3-2 lead and the Lighting added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Mansfield managed just four hits off starter Ashley Antosh who struck out six and walked three in picking up her first win of the season. Pratt was charged with the loss.

Mansfield (3-4) will hit the road for spring break traveling toe the West Virginia Wesleyan Softball Challenge as well as games at Barton and UNC-Pembroke.
