Mounties Snap Losing-Skid with 86-57 Win at Clarion
CLARION –
Joe Bell topped four Mountaineers in double-figures with a game-high 22 points and
Charles Pemberton recorded a double-double to lead Mansfield to a convincing 86-57 PSAC crossover win at Clarion Wednesday night.
Mansfield, which held the lead in all but 15 seconds in the game, took a 14-5 lead on a layup and ensuing free throw by
Ralik Wise after the first five minutes of the game.
The Mountaineers extended their lead to 25-9 on a 3-pointer by
Xavier Warner midway through the first half and went up 31-11 on another 3-pointer by Warner two minutes later. Following a
Kenny Johnson layup with two seconds remaining in the first half, MU took a 48-26 advantage into intermission.
Mansfield continued to dominate the game in the second half, methodically extending the lead to as much as 34 points when Warner scored on a layup with just under six minutes remaining to give the Mountaineers a 79-45 advantage.
Mansfield, which had just three players scoring off field goals in a loss at Gannon the night before, got a well-rounded offensive attack with all nine active players making it into the scoring column.
Bell was again exceptional, hitting 7-of-13 from the floor and connecting on all seven free throws. He also pulled down six rebounds and dished out five assists. The junior now has 1,098 points in his career to move past Ryan Callahan (1,095, 2008-10) into 19th place on the all-time scoring list.
Xavier Warner got his first start of the season and responded with a season-best 18 points along with a game-high five steals.
Pemberton went 8-12 from the floor in scoring 16 points while recording his second double-double of the season with a game and season-high 15 rebounds. Senior
Onyema Utti also scored 16 points while pulling down five rebounds.
Mansfield held a commanding 51-37 rebounding advantage and blocked a season-best eight shots in the game. It was the best defensive outing of the season for the Mountaineers which held Clarion to a season-low 57 points.
Mike Kromka led three Clarion players in double-figures with 17 points. DeMarius Miller and Aaron Johnson each scored 12 points.
Mansfield snaps a six-game losing-streak and improves to 2-8 overall.
The Mountaineers close out the 2013 portion of their schedule when they host Pitt-Johnstown this Saturday afternoon on the First Citizens Community Bank Court in Decker Gymnasium.
