Mounties Have Solid Showing in Exhibition Loss at Towson
TOWSON, MD –
Joe Bell scored 16 points to led three Mountaineers in double-figures as Mansfield put in a solid showing in 85-65 exhibition loss at NCAA Division I Towson Wednesday night.
Mansfield jumped out to an early lead before Towson, the preseason favorite in the CAA, picked up steam behind guard Rafriel Guthrie who scored 21 of his game-high 32 points in the first half.
Fouls and free throws were the story of the first half with Mansfield whistled for 19 first half fouls leading to 21 of Towson's 51 points. Four of Mansfield starters;
Onyema Utti,
Kenny Johnson, and
Kevonte McClain were charged with three fouls each before halftime.
The Mountaineers were charged with 32 fouls on the night while Towson was assessed with 26 fouls.
Mansfield was cold early in the game, hitting just three of its first 10 shots while Towson drained seven of its first 10 attempts.
Mansfield trailed 51-35 after the first half and pulled to 53-39 three minutes into the second half on a jumper by McClain.
For the game, Mansfield shot 38.2% from the floor to Towson's 51.1%. Towson held a 45-30 rebounding advantage and connected on 33-of-49 free throws to Mansfield's 15-of-24 from the line.
In addition to his 16 points, Bell pulled down a team-best six rebounds and dished out three assists. Johnson added 12 points while Utti scored 11 points.
Mansfield will travel to St. Bonaventure this Saturday for another NCAA Division I exhibition game.
