MANSFIELD –
Stephanie Simmeth delivered a walk-off double in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Mansfield a 8-7 win over Lock Haven to complete a sweep over the Bald Eagles in a key PSAC Central doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Helen Lutes Field.
Mansfield won the opener 3-2 behind a complete-game from
Kate Pratt and home run by
Danielle Long along with RBI's by
Kaitlyn Harris and Simmeth.
The sweep moves Mansfield into a tie with IUP for second place in the PSAC Central at the end of the first half of divisional play.
The sweep also made a perfect day for seniors
Erin Carroll,
Jamie Castellano and
Jordan Rishel who were honored during pregame Senior Day ceremonies.
In the opener, the Mountaineers
Kate Pratt and Lock Haven's Sarah Morse were locked in a scoreless pitching dual until Mansfield scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Morse held the Mountaineers scoreless over the first four innings before Mansfield junior
Danielle Long drilled a screaming line shot over the left field fence for a 1-0 lead. The next batter,
Erin Carroll then doubled to right. Sophomore
Kaitlyn Harris pinch hit for
Allie Earle and double down the left field line to increase the lead to 2-0. Simmeth then singled to left for a 3-0 lead.
Lock Haven got a run back in the top of the sixth on a solo home by Nichole Smith to cut the lead to 3-1 after six innings of play.
Lock Haven threatened again in the top of the seventh when Nikki Weaknecht delivered a one-out double and moved to third on a fielder's choice. Bridgette Clark then singled to drive in Weaknecht to pull to 3-2.
With two outs and a runner on first, Pratt closed out the game by getting Smith to fly out to right field.
Pratt improved to 5-1 on the season scattering seven hits and striking out four.
In the nightcap, Mansfield jumped out of the gate early getting four runs in the bottom of the fourth starting with a leadoff home run by
Chara Dixon.
Courtney Bauder singled and stole second before Long singled and took second on the throw giving Mansfield runners on second and third.
Erin Carroll then singled to empty the bases and Simmeth doubled in the fourth run of the inning.
Lock Haven got two runs back in the third on a two-run home run by Weaknecht.
Mansfield increased its lead to 5-2 with a run in the third on an RBI single by Long.
But in the fourth, Erin Clary hit a solo homer with one out to chase Mansfield starter
Caitlin Klobosits from the mound and Lock Haven loaded the bases before Weaknecht belted a grand slam giving the Bald Eagles a 7-5 lead.
Mansfield rallied to tie the game in the fifth when Pratt led off the inning with a double and later scored on a double by Harris. Long then singled in Harris
with two outs to knot the score at 7-7.
Lock Haven threatened in the seventh with Cacciotti led off with a double and walk gave the Bald Eagles runners at first and second with no outs. Pratt then come in to pitch and got the next three batters out in order to get out of the jam.
Mansfield failed to score in the bottom of the inning sending the game into extra-innings.
Lock Haven got a runner to second with two outs in the top of the eighth but Pratt stuck out the final batter to end the threat.
In the bottom half of the inning,
Jordan Rishel led off with a walk before Simmeth drilled a double to left center field to plate the winning run.
Pratt picked up the win allowing no hits over the final two innings while striking out two earning her sixth win in seven decisions on the year.
Danielle Long went 3-4 with two RBI's for Mansfield while Simmeth was 2-5 with a double and two RBI.
Sarah Morse took the loss for Lock Haven with Nikkie Weaknecht going 2-5 with two home runs and six RBI's.
For the day, Mansfield's
Danielle Long went 4-6 with a home run and three RBI with Simmeth collecting three hits in eight at-bats including three RBI's.
With the sweep, Mansfield improves to 17-8 overall and 5-3 in divisional play to move into a tie for second place in the PSAC Central with IUP.
The 17 wins are the most victories in a season since the Mountaineers posted a 21-22 mark in 2006.
Mansfield travels to Bloomsburg for a key divisional doubleheader on Tuesday.
