Mansfield Rallies in Nightcap to Earn Split at Shippensburg

SHIPPENSBURG – Stephen Stopper went three-for-three in the nightcap as Mansfield rallied for four runs in the 6th inning to win 6-5 and earn a split on the road against Shippensburg Friday afternoon in PSAC East division action.

The Mountaineers fell 8-2 in game one.

In the opener, Shippensburg took an early lead in the 2nd inning when Pat Kregeloh hit a one-out home run over the left field fence. The Raiders added another run in the inning to lead 2-0 after Tyler Shover plated Steve Sulcoski with an RBI single.

Shippensburg hung three runs on the board in the bottom of the 3rd to hold a 5-0 advantage over the Mountaineers.

In the top of the 4th, Dylan Woodworth reached on an error and moved to second on a wild pitch before Matt Fisher laced an RBI triple into right field to give Mansfield their first run of the game. Fisher later scored on an Anthony Renz RBI groundout.

The Raiders added three insurance runs in the bottom of the 8th as Shippensburg came away with the victory.

Nick Umberger pitched a complete game three-hitter for the raiders to earn his seventh win of the season. Umberger allowed just two earned runs and struck out two batters in the winning effort.

Junior Curtis Harpster took the loss after giving up five earned runs on four hits in 2.1 innings of work. Senior Eric Conway pitched 3.2 innings on the mound, giving up three earned runs on three hits while striking out three batters.

Fisher, Brian Milliman and Jordan Miller each collected a hit apiece in the game.

In the nightcap, Mansfield found itself in a hole once again after allowing two runs in the 1st inning and another in the 2nd to trail Shippensburg 3-0.

In the top of the 3rd, Jon Moser's RBI double down the left field line plated Woodworth, who reached on an error. Two batters later, Moser scored on an error by the shortstop to cut Mansfield's deficit to 3-2

Danny Brown allowed just one batter to reach base through the next three innings, holding Shippensburg to their one-run lead.

The Mountaineers put their rally caps on in the top of the 6th as Stephen Stopper's RBI single to left centerfield brought home Jon Taddeo, who reached with a one-out double, and tied the game at 3-3. Miller followed with an RBI single to score Milliman and push Stopper over to third base. Ernie Ruch's two-RBI single to right field plated Stopper and Miller to cap a four-run rally as the Mounties took over the lead at 6-3.

However, Shippensburg pulled within a run after scoring two runs in the bottom of the inning.

After retiring the side in the top of the 7th, the Raiders led off the bottom of the inning with a Cody Kulp single. Kulp moved over to second, then to third after two straight ground outs by Ship. With the game-winning run at the plate, senior Andy Young struck out the final Shippensburg batter on a called third strike to give Mansfield the victory.

Young pitched the final two innings to earn his fourth save of the season. Brown picked-up his third win of the year after pitching 5.0 innings on the bump, giving up three earned runs on four hits.

Stopper went three-for-three at the plate with an RBI and a run scored to lead Mansfield offensively.

The Mountaineers host Shippensburg tomorrow afternoon at Shaute Field for senior day.
