Renz and Milliman Homer in Nightcap to give Mansfield split with Bloomsburg

MANSFIELD – Andy Young threw a complete-game five-hitter and Brian Milliman and Anthony Renz each hit home runs to lead Mansfield to an 8-4 win over Bloomsburg in the second game of a PSAC East doubleheader at Shaute Field Friday afternoon.

Bloomsburg won the opener 9-2.

In the nightcap, Bloomsburg scored two runs in the top of the first on a two-run triple by Vince Smarrelli.

Mansfield answered back in the bottom of the inning putting together five straight hits including an RBI single by Renz and a three-run double by Jon Taddeo to take a 4-2 lead.

The Mountaineers would add two more runs in the bottom of the third when Taddeo singled with two outs and scored on Milliman's third home run of the season.

Mansfield put the game away with two more runs in the bottom of the fifth when Matt Fisher led off the inning with a double and scored on Renz's two-run shot over the left center field fence to increase the lead to 8-2.

Bloomsburg narrowed the score to 8-4 with solo runs in the sixth and seventh innings but could pull no closer.

Young threw his second consecutive complete game to improve to 4-4 on the season. The senior scattered five hits while striking out four.

Fisher and Taddeo each had three hits to pace Mansfield's 10-hit attack, while Renz went 2-4 with a home run and three RBI.

Bryan Morris started and took the loss for Bloomsburg to fall to 5-3 on the season.

In the opener, three Mansfield errors led to seven unearned that the Mountaineers could never recover from. Bloomsburg got three unearned runs with two outs in the first and two more unearned runs in the second.

The Huskies added four more runs in the fourth inning to increase its lead to 7-0 before Mansfield got on the board in the bottom of the sixth. Matt Fisher opened the inning for the Mountaineers with a double to right and moved to third on a passed ball before John Moser lifted a run scoring sacrifice fly.

Stephen Stopper walked and was driven home by a Jon Taddeo double.

Fisher went 2-4 with a pair of doubles while Taddeo went 2-3 with a double and RBI.

Joe Candelmo went the first four innings in a tough luck loss to fall to 2-7 on the season. Philip Bain came in relief in the fifth and gave up just one hit over three innings.

Mansfield improves to 10-28 overall and 3-13 in the PSAC East. Bloomsburg is 20-16 on the season including 9-9 in PSAC East play.

The two teams meet in a doubleheader at Bloomsburg Saturday.
