NEW CASTLE, Del – Joe Marciano's two-out RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning pushed across the game-winning run as Wilmington University came away with the 3-2 victory to sweep Mansfield in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at Wilson Field. The Mountaineers fell in the opener 10-1.
In the opener, Wilmington struck early as Bryan Miller laced a bases-clearing double to right field to put the Wildcats up three runs in the bottom of the 1
st . One at bat later, Brandon Payne singled to bring home another run and chase away Mansfield's starting pitcher. After advancing to third with a passed ball and a stolen base, Payne was plated via an RBI groundout to make the score 5-0.
In the 3
rd inning, junior
Dylan Woodworth reached base after being hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a Wildcat error. Freshman
Anthony Renz bought in Woodworth the very next at bat with an RBI double to cut the Wilmington lead.
However, the score proved to be the lone run for the Mountaineers.
The Wilcats tacked on four runs in the 4
th inning and one more in the 5
th as Wilmington totaled 10 runs on 11 hits in the opening contest.
Junior
Curtis Harpster took the loss, giving up five earned runs in the first inning. The Wildcats' Justin DeLong picked up the win after pitching 5.0 innings while giving up three hits, one earned run and striking out seven.
In the nightcap, Wilmington again took the lead in the bottom of the 1
st inning, but was held to just one run via a sacrifice fly.
In the top of the 3
rd,
Jordan Miller and
Conor Thompson reached base safely with back-to-back singles before Woodworth loaded the bases with a walk. Renz brought home the game-tying run with his RBI single in the very next at bat. Mat Fisher followed with a ball down the first base line to bring home Thompson and give Mansfield the 2-1 lead.
After the Mountaineers' rally, neither team was able to record a hit as Wilmington went into the bottom of the 7
th inning trailing by a run.
In the 7
th, Wilmington forced extras after Mansfield walked the tying run home.
In the top of the 8
th, Woodworth drew a two-out walk, but the inning ended after the runner was caught stealing second base.
Wilmington's Brandon Payne reached on a two-out double in the bottom of the 8
th before Joe Marciano hit a walk-off single to score Payne and secure the win.
Freshman
Jeremy Mapstone was hit with the loss after pitching 2.2 innings in relief. Junior
Joel Worthington took a no decision, giving up just two hits in 3.0 innings pitched.
Wilmington's Jordan Oncay earned the win.
Mansfield is back in action on Friday when it hosts PSAC East rival Bloomsburg University at Shaute Field.
