CALIFORNIA, PA –
Matt Fisher went 5-7 with two triples and five RBI's to lead Mansfield to a split at California in a PSAC crossover doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
Mansfield won the opener 6-4 and dropped the nightcap 7-4.
In the opener, Mansfield broke up a scoreless game when
Levi Weiskopff led off the top of the third with a single. Weiskopff moved to second on an infield single by
Jeremy Mapstone with both runners moving up on a sacrifice bunt by
Dylan Woodworth before Fisher tripled to drive in two runs for a 2-0 Mansfield lead.
California cut the lead to 2-1 on an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth before Mansfield got three runs in the top of the fifth with
Jon Taddeo delivering a base-loaded single to drive in two runs.
California chipped away with a run in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out solo home run by Chuck Gasti to cut the lead to 5-2.
Mansfield made it 6-2 with a run on an RBI single by Fisher in the sixth.
In the sixth, California scored a run to narrow the lead to 6-3 before
Andy Young came in relief of Mansfield starter
Joe Candelmo with runners on second and third and two outs. Young stuck out the next batter to end the threat.
In the seventh Mansfield went out in order but California made it interesting in the bottom of the inning. The first batter struck out but reached first on a dropped third strike and back-to-back singles loaded the bases. Young got the next batter to line out for the first out and struck out the following hitter before a Mansfield error allowed a run to score putting the score at 6-4. But Young got the next batter to fly out to centerfield to end the rally and game.
Candelmo scattered six hits over 5.2 innings while striking out five to improve to 2-5 on the season. Young got his second save of the season, striking out three in 11.1 innings of relief.
Fisher led Mansfield 10-hit offensive attack going 2-3 with a triple and three RBI's. Taddeo went 2-4 with two RBI and freshman
Anthony Renz was 2-4.
Kyle Thomas went the first four innings on the mound for California picking up the loss to fall to 3-5 on the season. Gasti led Cal at the plate going 3-4 with a double, a home run and an RBI.
In the nightcap, Mansfield outhit Cal 12-4 but the Vulcans took advantage of eight walks by Mountaineer pitchers and three field errors while also stealing seven bases to pull off a 7-4 win.
Mansfield scored the game's first run when Fisher tripled in a run in the top of the third. Cal took the lead in the bottom half of the inning on a two-out, two-run single by Bowser.
California added another run in the bottom of the fourth to increase its lead to 3-1 before Mansfield closed to 3-2 on an RBI single by Fisher in the top of the fifth.
But Cal would counter with four runs on just one hit in the bottom of the fifth to go up 7-2.
Mansfield tried to rally in the top of the seventh scoring on a solo home run by freshman Renz and an RBI double by
Ernie Ruch, but couldn't pull any closer.
Renz went 3-3 with a home run and RBI to lead Mansfield while Fisher was 3-4 with a triple and two RBI.
Mansfield falls to 8-21 overall and travels to Slippery Rock Sunday for a PSAC crossover doubleheader.
