FLEMINGTON, NJ – The Mansfield University baseball team dropped 17-1 and 12-7 decisions to UMass Lowell in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at the Diamond Nation baseball complex in Flemington, NJ.
In the opener, starting pitcher
Joe Candelmo cruised through the first three innings, giving up just one hit while striking out five. However, the junior lefty ran into some trouble in fourth, surrendering four earned runs.
Candelmo earned the loss in 6.0 innings on the bump, allowing six earned runs in total while finishing with seven strikeouts.
Mansfield's lone run came on a
Conor Thompson solo shot over the left field fence. Thompson also added a double in the contest in a two-for-three effort.
Senior
Brian Milliman and junior
Dylan Woodworth each recorded two hits in the opener.
In the nightcap, the Mounties scored three runs in the first three innings, but the River Hawks answered back by scoring eight runs of their own.
Lowell added four more runs to pick up their second win of the day.
Freshman
Anthony Renz led the Mountaineer offense going two-for-four at the plate with two runs and two RBI. Renz hit his first career home run in the fifth inning with an opposite field shot over the right field fence.
Thompson and Milliman each went two-for-four with two doubles in the second game. Milliman recorded two runs and an RBI while Thompson had two RBI.
Junior
Danny Brown earned the loss giving up seven earned runs in 2.0 innings pitched.
The Mountaineers square off against Lowell again tomorrow for two more games starting at 11am.
