WEST CHESTER – Mansfield suffered a pair of losses at West Chester Saturday afternoon in the PSAC East opener for both schools.
The Mountaineers dropped the first game 4-1 despite a solid effort by senior
Andy Young and lost the nightcap 17-1 behind a two-hitter by West Chester's Fred Breidenbach.
In the opener, the two teams battled to a scoreless tie for the first four innings with each team failing to capitalize on scoring opportunities in the fourth. In the top of the inning,
Jon Moser singled with two outs for Mansfield and advanced to third on a double down the left field line by
Conor Thompson giving the Mountaineers runners at second and third before the threat ended with a fly to center.
In the bottom of the inning, Joe Wendle led off with a double to center and advanced to second on a fly ball. Justin Lamborn then walked, putting runners at first and third before Young struck out Jordan Wlodarczyk for the second out. Lamborn then attempted to steal second and Wendle broke for home but was thrown out at the plate ending the inning.
West Chester scored all three of their runs in the fifth with two outs with triples by Jack Provine and Wendle.
Mansfield got its only run of the game in the top of the seventh when Moser led off the inning with a double down the right field line. He moved to third on a single by
Brian Milliman and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Levi Weiskopff.
Young allowed just one earned run over 5.1 innings and struck out three to take his third loss of the season in five decisions. Joe Gunkel scattered five hits and struck out four in going the distance for West Chester.
Moser had two of Mansfield's five hits including a double.
In the nightcap, West Chester took a 1-0 scoring on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first. Mansfield tied the score in the top of the second when freshman
Anthony Renz and Moser walked to start off the inning with Renz later scoring on a sacrifice fly by Milliman.
Wet Chester then erupted scoring 14 runs over the next three innings to put the game out of reach.
Louis Sick took the loss for Mansfield while Fred Breidenbach improved to 3-0 with a complete game two-hitter for West Chester.
The two teams meet in a doubleheader Sunday at Shaute Field starting at 1 p.m.
