WINTER HAVEN, Fla – The Mansfield University baseball team dropped two nail-biters to the University of Charleston (WV) Tuesday afternoon in Winter Haven, FL. Mansfield came out on the wrong end of a high scoring 14-12 contest in the opener before falling 6-5 on a walk-off single in the nightcap.
In game one, it was all Charleston in the opening three innings as the Golden Eagles scored two runs in both the first and second innings and three runs in the third to lead 7-0 over the Mounties. Mansfield chipped away at their deficit in the bottom of the third scoring three runs before using a seven-run fourth inning to lead 10-7.
Charleston's hot bats didn't stop as the Eagles added seven more runs throughout the fifth, six and seventh innings to secure the win.
Junior
Stephen Stopper led the Mansfield offense, going three-for-five in the two-spot with two runs and an RBI. Juniors
Conor Thompson and
Dylan Woodworth each recorded two hits and two RBIs apiece while Woodworth added a run.
Corey Lakatos picked up the win for the Eagles pitching 1.1 innings while allowing no runs.
In game two, the Mountaineers found themselves trailing 3-0 before using a pair of two-run innings in the fifth and sixth to lead by a run. After Charleston scored the game tying run in the bottom of the sixth Mansfield scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh when Thompson scored
Matt Fisher with an RBI single.
However, Charleston used a one-out rally to score the walk-off hit and come away with their second win of the evening.
Stopper went three-for-four in the contest while Thompson, Fisher and
Brian Milliman each recorded two hits apiece.
The Eagles Stu Cohen earned the victory while senior
Mike Martin took the loss.
The Mountaineers conclude their Florida trip with a single game against Indianapolis Wednesday morning.
