WINTER HAVEN, Fla – The Mansfield University baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader against Northwood University (MI) Monday afternoon in Winter Haven, FL. The Mountaineers fell in the opener 1-0 before taking a 7-3 loss in the nightcap.
In game one, junior
Joe Candelmo pitched a six-inning complete game giving up just one earned run on six hits. Candelmo struck out two batters and didn't issue any walks in the game.
The single run by Northwood was enough for the Timberwolves to come away with the victory as Mansfield had trouble producing at the plate.
Junior
Dylan Woodworth had the only two hits of the game for the Mounties. Senior
Jon Moser and junior
Stephen Stopper each drew two walks apiece.
In game two, Northwood held a 2-0 advantage over Mansfield before the Mounties recorded runs in the bottom of the third, fourth, and fifth innings to lead 3-2. Northwood broke the game open in the top of the sixth inning after hanging five runs on the board.
Freshman
Anthony Renz led Mansfield offensively, going two-for-two at the dish with two stolen bases and a run scored. Moser and
Matt Fisher each recorded runs in the contest.
Northwood benefited from four triples in the winning effort.
Mansfield's
Danny Brown earned a no decision after giving up three earned on four hits. Brown struck out three and issued five walks. Junior
Curtis Harpster was tabbed with the loss.
The Mounties play the University of Charleston (WV) in doubleheader action tomorrow at 1:30 pm.
