Mounties Top Ashland 2-1

Box Score

AUBURNDALE, Fla – Freshman Louis Sick tossed seven innings on the mound giving up just one earned while striking out five to lead Mansfield to a 2-1 victory over Ashland (OH) Sunday, March 11 in Auburndale, FL.

“We're starting to come around” explained head coach Harry Hillson. “We're playing good teams and it's making us better.”

Ashland stymied the Mountaineer bats through the first three innings as both Brad Thomas and Zach Wolfe stayed perfect on the bump. Wolfe came into relief in the second inning after Thomas was injured while covering first base.

Dylan Woodworth and Stephen Stopper led off the fourth inning with a pair of hits but Mansfield was unable to bring the two home.

The Mountaineers led off the inning with a pair of hits again in the fifth as Jon Moser singled up the middle and Conor Thompson doubled down the left field line to put runners at second and third. Joel Worthington and Jon Taddeo each recorded RBI's to put Mansfield up 2-0.

Ashland cut their deficit in the top of the seventh as Mickey Manser scored Matt Gundlach with an RBI double.

Mansfield threatened with runners on first and second in the bottom of the eighth, but failed to bring in an insurance run.

Sick was stellar on the mound in his first collegiate start as the freshman pitched 6.1 shutout innings on his way to the win. Junior Curtis Harpster picked up the save allowing no hits in two innings pitched.

Wolfe took the loss giving up two earned runs on five hits in 5.2 innings pitched.

Mansfield improves to 6-6 on the season after winning its second straight.

The Mountaineers play a doubleheader against Northwood (MI) tomorrow at 1:30 pm in Winter Haven, FL.
