AUBURNDALE, Fla – The Mansfield University baseball team split a doubleheader against Saginaw Valley State University (MI) Saturday night dropping the opener 23-1 before coming away with a 13-5 victory in the nightcap.
Saginaw got the bats swinging early in the first game, cranking out 23 runs on 19 hits.
The Mountaineers scored their lone run in the final frame when
Anthony Renz brought home
Stephen Stopper with an RBI single up the middle.
In game two, the Cardinals answered Mansfield's single run in the top of the first by scoring five of their own in the bottom of the inning.
Saginaw's offensive production ended when senior
Andy Young came into relief with one out in the first. Young went on to throw 6.2 innings of shutout ball while giving up just four hits.
Young struck out six on his way to earning his second win of the season.
The Mountaineers hung two runs on the board in the third before exploding for eight runs in the fourth. Mansfield tacked on two more insurance runs in the final inning.
Senior
Jon Moser went three-for-five at the plate with three RBI and two runs.
Joel Worthington and
Jon Taddeo each recorded two hits and two runs in the winning effort.
Stopper and
Dylan Woodworth scored three and two runs respectively while
Conor Thompson and
Ernie Ruch each crossed home once.
Mansfield plays a single game against Ashland University (OH) tomorrow at 9:30 am.
