MANSFIELD –
Joe Bell scored a game-high 26 points, but it wouldn't be enough to overcome a 16-7 disadvantage on the offensive boards as East Stroudsburg held on for a tough 82-77 win over Mansfield in a PSAC East contest Wednesday evening in Decker Gymnasium.
Mansfield trailed 35-27 at intermission and East Stroudsburg extended its lead to 46-33 a little more than three minutes into the second half.
The Mountaineers rallied over the next four minutes, cutting the score to 51-48 after a pair of press-busting dunks by Bell and
Chuck Harper followed by a Bell layup.
East Stroudsburg answered right back, extending the lead to 72-61 with just over five minutes to play. But Mansfield wouldn't fold, chipping the lead down to 77-72 on a 3-pointer by
Cory Henneghan with 1:07 left. The Mountaineers pulled to 81-77 on a Bell layup and free throw with 17 second on the clock.
Mansfield shot 49.1% from the floor to East Stroudsburg's 41.5% but the Mountaineers couldn't overcome East Stroudsburg's advantage on the offense glass and turned the ball over 17 times – the second most this season -- in the loss.
In addition to Bell's 26 points,
Josh Dupuy scored 15 points with six assists for the Mountaineers while
Kyle Bradley chipped in with 10 points.
Whis Grant and Gerald Bridges each scored 14 points to lead East Stroudsburg (15-8, 11-6 PSAC).
Mansfield falls to 7-14 overall and 4-13 in PSAC play. The Mountaineers host Cheyney this Saturday.
