Mansfield drops 66-65 nail biter to Edinboro in PSAC opener
MANSFIELD – Bryan Theriot's hook shot with just over 10 seconds remaining lifted Edinboro to a 66-65 win over Mansfield in a thrilling PSAC opener for both school's Saturday afternoon in Decker Gymnasium.
Mansfield had the last possession of the game but turned the ball over with just over two seconds to play.
The loss negated a torrid second half rally by the Mountaineers and dampened a double-double performance from
Joe Bell along with 17-point efforts from
Chuck Harper and
Charles Becoats.
The game featured 15 lead changes and was tied 10 times including three lead changes over the last 100 seconds.
As was the tone of the day, the two teams battled to a 29-29 tie at halftime.
The score was tied 33-33 three minutes into the second half when Edinboro went on a 15-2 run to take a 48-35 lead on a layup by Jay Fletcher at the 13:35 mark.
Mansfield countered with a rally of its own, using a 10-0 run over the next three minutes to put the score at 48-45 on a layup by
Onyema Utti three minutes later. The Mountaineers would tie the game 52-52 on a 3-pointer by
Chuck Harper with just over six minutes to play.
From that point on, the game feature nine lead changes or ties.
Edinboro broke a 61-61 tie, taking a 64-61 advantage on a 3-pointer by Johnathan Logan with 1:29 left. Mansfield cut the lead to 64-62 on a free throw by Utti and took a 65-64 advantage 40 seconds later on a 3-pointer by Harper.
Bell, who picked up his fourth foul midway through the second half, scored 16 points and pulled down a team-best 10 rebounds. Harper scored 13 of his 17 points in the second half while Utti added 11 points and five rebounds.
Edinboro (4-0, 1-0 PSAC), which entered the game averaging a PSAC-best 93.7 points per game, was led by Theriot who scored a game-high 22 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Jay Fletcher scored 12 points and Isaiah Prince added 11 points.
Mansfield (1-2, 0-1 PSAC) hosts Slippery Rock, which beat Bloomsburg 84-66 Saturday, on Sunday afternoon in Decker Gymnasium.
