FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mountie men fall to defending A10 Champions St. Bonaventure in season opening exhibition

OLEAN, NY – Newcomer Onyema Utti recorded a double-double while Joe Bell and Brad Williams scored 11 points each but Mansfield fell to defending A10 Champions St. Bonaventure 104-61 in an exhibition game Saturday afternoon.

Mansfield, featuring seven newcomers from last season, tied the game at 4-4 on a layup by senior Charles Becoats two minutes into the game before the Bonnies, who advanced to the NCAA National Championship Tournament last season, went on a 21-2 run to take a 25-6 lead with just over 10 minutes remaining in the first half.

Mansfield, plagued by turnover early, cut the lead to 29-17 on a Brad Williams layup with just under eight minutes before halftime, but could pull no closer and trailed 49-29 at the break.

The Mountaineer managed to play the Bonnies evenly for the first eight minutes of the second half cutting the lead to 66-47 on layup by Kevonte McClain after a Utti steal, but managed just 13 more points over the final 12 minutes of the game.

Mansfield shot 36% from the floor in the second half to St. Bonaventure's 62%. The Mountaineers, who held an 18-15 advantage on the offensive glass, turned the ball over 21 times to the Bonnies 10.

St. Bonaventure connected on 22-of-28 free throws to Mansfield's 10-of-21.

Utti, a junior forward, connected on 6-of-11 from the floor and hit 2-of-3 free throws for 14 points while pulling down a game-high 10 rebounds. Bell went 5-10 from the floor in scoring 11 points while Brad Williams also had 11 points.

Demitrius Conger led five players in double-figures for St. Bonaventure with a game high 25 points. Youssou Ndoye added 14 points.
